CS5 Sketch Brush
We all like the new brushed in Photoshop. Or we should. The problem is that the bristle brushes take a bit CPU and on slower machines they’re sufficient for details but the slight lag might render sketching a pain.
This however works fine on my old tincan:

This is what will be “A crime-infested alley in a seedy neighbourhood.” Yes, I’m obviously a rather huge Middleman fan. You have to deal with that.
First I doodle about in Paint Tool Sai and create a grey background. Preferably with some textures in it so I used a brush instead of the fill tool.
Block out some of the surroundings.

Thought I’d share my background sketch brush for Sai. Save this image as flat_noik in BMP format to the sai\elemap folder.
Open the sai\brushform.conf file in Notepad and add the line: 2,elemap\flat_noik.bmp
Start up Sai and create a new brush with these settings:

Perhaps I’m predisposed by being bored too easily, but I think a lot can be said for trying out new styles. Sure, we tend to stick with what we’ve developed over time and I don’t say that’s a bad thing. Not at all.
